Infectious Diseases Guidelines

The following guidelines are taken from the Health Protection Agency (PHE) Health protection in schools and other childcare facilities.

Diarrhoea and sickness

This is highly infectious and can spread rapidly. Please do not send your child back to nursery after an episode, and please ensure that your child has been clear for 48 hours before sending them back to nursery.

Chickenpox

The typical incubation period is between 11-21 days

The minimal period of exclusion from nursery is 6 days from onset of the rash.

Conjunctivitis

No period of exclusion (treatment recommended) We would also recommend that children do not return unless comfortable.

German Measles (Rubella)

The typical incubation period is between 14-21 days.

The minimal period of exclusion is 14 days from onset of the rash. *Please inform the nursery so that we are able to notify parents.

Hand, Foot & Mouth

There is currently no exclusion period. However, this is infectious, and we would recommend sending children back to nursery once blisters have scabbed over to lessen the spread. We would also recommend you sending children back to nursery only once your child is comfortable.

Impetigo

The typical incubation period varies.

The minimal period of exclusion is until lesions have healed or within 48 hours after commencing antibiotic treatment.

Measles

The typical incubation period is 10-15 days.

The minimal period of exclusion is 4 days from the onset of a rash.

Mumps

The typical incubation period is 15-24 days

The minimal period of exclusion is until swelling has subsided.

Scarlet Fever

A child can return to nursery 24 hours after commencing appropriate antibiotic treatment; however, we would recommend children return to nursery only when they are feeling comfortable.

Slapped Cheek

There is no period of exclusion, however we would recommend children only return once they feel comfortable.

Whooping cough

The usual incubation period is 7-10 days

The minimal period of exclusion is 21 days from onset of paroxysmal cough.
